Natural Remedies to Rid Pets of Fleas and Ticks
Fleas and ticks are the worst fears of every pet parent. Not only are they dangerous for your four-legged friend, but also can pose a serious health risk to you as well. There are products in the market that can help you protect your pet from pesky fleas and ticks. However, resort to them only on a vet’s recommendation as they can be harsh on your pet. Instead, try some of these preventive natural remedies for fleas and ticks.
- Rosemary
Flea sprays include chemicals that can have side effects on your pets. Instead, boil 2 cups of rosemary in water for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid and add a gallon of warm water and wait until the water is lukewarm and comfortable for your pet. Pour it over your pet and let it dry naturally.
- Shampoo
Shampoos specifically made to get rid of fleas and ticks are effective and an affordable solution for your pets. However, they still contain chemicals and are not 100% organic and natural. Also, bathing your pet is not easy, especially if they are averse to water. However, if you insist on using shampoo, you can opt for DIY shampoos. There are numerous pet shampoo recipes on the internet and you can choose the one that is most effective for your pet and as per the ingredients you have.
- Lemon spray
Another natural remedy for fleas and ticks is a lemon spray repellent. Cut four lemons into quarters and boil them for half an hour in water. Then, cover the concoction and let it sit overnight. In the morning, spray the repellent on your pet, especially behind their ears and base of the tail; but be careful to avoid their eyes. If your pet won’t let you spray, try rubbing fresh citrus on your dog or cat’s fur.
- Essential oils
A lot of pet parents have had success in getting rid of fleas and ticks using rose geranium oil. However, this does not work for cats, causing an allergic reaction. You could try using neem oil that is an all-natural insect repellent native to India, Burma, and Sri Lanka. Add a few drops of neem oil to your pet shampoo or with a flea-repellent spray. However, this oil should be used as directed by a vet, as it can be toxic for your pet.
- Apple cider vinegar
Add one or two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to your pet’s water. This is one of the easiest ways to prevent fleas and ticks. But ensure that your pet is not allergic to vinegar. You can test this by adding two-three drops of vinegar on your pet’s tongue. If they do not have an allergic reaction for days. then they can tolerate vinegar.
